This is a wonderful little sandpiper carving by 20th century artist Jack Francis. He was known for selling his wooden bird sculptures at shows and lived in Mt. Shasta, California. Active 1960s-1970s. His work shows up from time to time at auction and here on eBay, and this sculpture would be a great decorative piece for the mantle, evoking the seaside.
This little guy stands on bronze legs atop a piece of burlwood. The wood is hand-shaped, lightly painted, and polished. The grain of the wood is highlighted to mimic the flow of feathers. Just a lovely, sweet little piece. 6" tall x 7" wide x 5" deep
As noted, there is a bit of loss on one side of the tail, perhaps where it may have been scraped lightly against a wall. The scrape is about 1" long, but isn't an obvious area of damage. Overall, good used vintage condition.
