Young women from China were trained to do fine embroidery. It was an art form from the early ages. This little purse made of blue silk and lined in the same material in pink is a fine example of SATIN STITCH, done in varying shades of pink, blue and green pastel colors. The designs are auspicious symbols, such as the upside down bat which signifies fortune in front of you, peony flower for wealth and beauty and chrysanthemum for longevity and happiness. The little purse would hold personal items such as a handkerchief or a snuff bottle. The black satin cords are draw strings to close the purse. The execution of the satin stitches are exquisite. They are flat and tight, and it is over 100 years old and still in good condition.
