A striking two-tier Negoro-style jūbako (重箱) with tortoiseshell-patterned exterior and bold vermillion interior.

Likely made in the late Shōwa period, this elegant lacquered bento box showcases the refined craftsmanship of Japanese resin lacquerware. The surface features a rich, mottled finish evocative of traditional Negoro-nuri, which imitates the look of aged and worn urushi through layers of translucent amber and deep brown tones. Its clean rectangular form and minimal detailing highlight its glossy, tactile beauty. Marked on the base with the characters “寿 旅館” (Kotobuki Ryokan), it may have originally been produced for use in a traditional inn.

Lightweight yet durable, this versatile piece is perfect for storing small items, serving sweets or appetizers, or simply as a decorative object. A collectible example of late-20th-century Japanese lacquer aesthetics.
