Duke was a Gold Medal swimmer from Hawaii who also popularized the sport of surfing!
He took his surfboard out to rescue 8 men from a fishing vessel that capsized in 1925. This act was called "The most superhuman surfboard rescue act the world has ever seen." [Wikipedia]
He also served as sheriff for Honolulu, Hawaii for 13 years after Olympic career and fought in World War 2 as a military police officer.
